League Cup Final – 25^th May - Petershill

Ayr United AFC 2-1 10m Rangers

Ayr United amateurs lifted the SSFL League Cup on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over their Rangers counterparts at New Petershill Park.

The Ayr side were huge underdogs going into the game against the current league champions and cup holders but despite having the lions share of possession Rangers rarely troubled Farrell in the United goal.

Both teams started nervously with the Glasgow side just edging the early stages. They were caught however when a poor defensive header put but keeper Hardie in trouble and he could only parry the ball into the path of Ayr forward Chris Todd who made no mistake from 12 yards. Ayr were struggling in the midfield area and keeper Farrell came to the rescue with a couple of fine reflex saves. As the half wore on Uniteds lightning breaks were beginning to cause problems with young wingers Robson and Todd using their pace to great effect. George Dunlop was sent through on goal but the veteran forward decided to pass instead of shoot and the chance was gone.

Alex Bojang replaced Graeme Brown at half-time as Ayr attempted to gain control of the midfield. The change had the desired effect and on 55 mins United were in dreamland. David Hainey fed a lovely ball to Chris Todd and the 19 year old hit man finished low into the bottom left corner. No Ayr United team ever does things the easy way and Rangers pulled a goal back when Neil Watton finished from six yards after a mix up in the Ayr defence. With everyone geared up for a grandstand finish it was United who took control for the final twenty minutes. Sub Chris Allan hit the bar with a looping header and both Todd brothers had chances to kill the game. The final whistle saw scenes of jubilation from the Ayr team and their supporters who had backed the boys brilliantly for the full 90 minutes.
